Liquids being transferred or dispensed carries small pieces of solid, electrically conductive material. These particles will become electrically charged and will want to release this charge to a ground source, such as the inside of a truck tank, or a small container causing an arc / spark. If a flammable mixture is in the container, this spark may cause a fire or explosion.
•When flammable liquids are transferred from one container to another, ensure that they are bonded to each other and grounded.
•Ensure that containers are made of a conductive material such as metal to allow the static charge to dissipate. Plastic jerry cans are permitted, providing they are in good condition and designed for the application.
•Bonding should be considered when steam cleaning, sand blasting, on moving belts, air movers and when handling powders or dusts.
