Safe Work Permits

Many Companies issue work crews a safe work permit.  Safe work permits are a communication tool and a contract between the issuer and the receiver. They are intended to be a checklist to ensure that all hazards are identified and adequate precautions are implemented before the job starts.

On most permits, the issuer agrees that he has inspected the work site, identified all the potential hazards and identified the procedures, equipment and precautions required to complete the job safely.  The receiver agrees to ensure that all workers will abide by the precautions and conditions stated on the permit.

There are several different types of permits, namely:

Cold Work

Where there will be no source of ignition in and around oil and gas processing equipment.  Jobs such as blinding or pipefitting are usually considered cold work.

Hot Work

Where there will be sources of ignition when working around gas and oil sources, such as welding, the use of electrical equipment, use of vehicles within battery limits of process units or even the use of battery operated equipment that is not explosion proof or CSA intrinsically safe.  In addition to other precautions, hot work requires gas tests to be  performed.  See Gas Detection Section (6.9).

Confined Space

See Confined Space Entry Section (7.2).

Special Jobs

Such as hot tie-ins, flare line tie-ins, excavations, live electrical work, etc.

If a Company has a work permit system, the senior Power Tech Industries Ltd. representative on site or his delegate will usually receive the permit.  The precautions stated on the permit will be agreed upon between the issuer and receiver.  If there is any misunderstanding, or disagreement on the procedures, precaution, equipment, etc. to be used, the permit receiver is not to sign the permit until all questions are answered and agreement is achieved. DO NOT SIGN / RECEIVE A PERMIT IF YOU DO NOT INTEND TO FOLLOW WHAT IT REQUIRES.  The permit contents shall be reviewed with the work crew during the pre-job meeting.
