Generally, flammable and combustible liquids are supplied and dispensed from 200 litre (45 gallon) drums. The following points should be considered when handling, storing and dispensing from these containers:
•Ensure that all such chemicals are stored outside buildings wherever possible on a proper loading rack; are properly labelled by manufacturer and are secured.
•Ensure that proper stands and barrel movers are supplied and used for dispensing purposes.
•Wherever a barrel is laid over on its side, it should be fitted with automatic shut off valves.
•Containers used for dispensing into should also be properly WHMIS labelled, should only be made of metal and should be properly bonded to the drum.
•Do not transport dispensed liquids in small containers in the cabs of vehicles.
•Ensure that all containers of chemical and flammable liquids are properly secured when being transported.
