Grass fires can occur at any time and progress very rapidly in dry windy conditions.  They can be caused by sparks, lit cigarettes, lightning, etc.  If you come upon a grass fire, or cause one on your work site, follow the proper procedure:

Ensure all personnel are safe and removed from the immediate area.  You may need their assistance to control the fire.

If the fire is small and it is safe to do so, try and extinguish it before it gets too large.  If your extinguisher goes empty, try to cover the fire with dirt or to dig a ditch in front of the fire to prevent it from spreading.

If you think the fire is beyond your ability to safely extinguish it, call 911 and report it.  If on a client site, contact the operator or their emergency contact number from the safe work permit or off the lease site entrance sign.

Secure the area, if it is safe to do so, try to keep others away
