Defective Tools

If a tool is defective in some way, DON’T USE IT.  Tag it, repair or have it repaired.  Let others know about the potential hazard.

Be aware of problems like:

Chisels and wedges with mushroomed heads

Split or cracked handles

Chipped or broken drill bits

Wrenches with worn out jaws

Tools which are not complete, such as files without handles

Defective electrical components

Air, gasoline or electric power tools, require skill and complete attention on the part of the user even when they are in good condition.  Don’t use power tools when they are defective in any way. IMMEDIATELY remove them from service and tag them to get repaired.

Watch for problems like:

Broken or inoperative guards

Insufficient or improper grounding due to damage on double insulated tools

Any defective electrical components

No ground wire on plug or cords or standard tools

The on/off switch not in good working order

Tool blade is cracked

The wrong grinder wheel is being used  

The guard has been wedged back on a power saw

When any machine or tool or material on a machine requires repair or adjustment while in motion or under power, the work is to be carried out as per written work practices and procedures by a person trained in these written work practices and procedures.  A copy of the written work practices and procedures shall be readily available for reference.
