Confined Space Entry / Transformer Vaults

Date Reviewed:  February 15, 2023

Although Power Tech Industries Ltd. employees are rarely required to enter a confined space, and when they do the Client Company’s representative has usually prepared the space for safe entry, the following practice is intended to provide Power Tech Industries Ltd. employees with some guidance on the minimum requirements for confined space entry.  Employees are required to be familiar with the following standard and ensure it is complied with as part of confined space entry.

A confined space is an area or space that:

is enclosed or partially enclosed that has restricted access or egress (not normally intended for human occupancy), AND

Due to its construction, design, location, atmosphere, or substances is or may become hazardous to a worker entering it.

Does not have an easy means of escape or rescue for a worker entering into it.

By definition, this is not limited to vessels, tanks, areas, etc. identified traditionally as confined space.  Excavation could also be considered a confined space if there is a potential for life threatening hazards in an excavation.
