Self Help:

Employees who believe they may have substance use/abuse problem are encouraged to seek advice provided by Substance Abuse Experts (SAEs), Employee Assistance Programs (EAPs), or Employee Family Assistance Programs (EFAPs) and follow appropriate treatment promptly before job performance or safety is compromised or a violation of the alcohol and drug policy begins.  Employees receiving assistance under an EAP or EFAP must comply with the terms and conditions of the program as a condition of their continued employment.

If an employee believes they are unable to comply with the alcohol and drug work rule, they should seek assistance by:

Contacting a family physician, qualified SAE or a person responsible for the administration of an EAP or EFAP.

Informing a family member or friend and asking for assistance in contacting a person responsible for the administration of an EAP or EFAP, or

Inform a co-worker, a supervisor, or a representative of the company of their wish to contact a person responsible for the administration of an EAP or EFAP.

If an employee requests help in overcoming an alcohol or drug abuse problem, the supervisor or manager shall:

Inform the employee of the assistance available under an EAP or EFAP.

Encourage an employee to utilize an EAP or EFAP which may assist said employee.

If an employee’s performance or safety problems persist or an accident/incident has occurred and alcohol or drugs are suspected, the employer may request that testing take place to confirm or eliminate alcohol and drugs as a contributing cause of the problem.  Return to work testing may be required following rehabilitation efforts.

Employees with an alcohol or drug problem and who have not violated the alcohol and drug policy, will not be disciplined for requesting help in overcoming the problem or because of involvement in a treatment program.  All employees who have completed primary treatment for substance abuse or dependency are strongly encourage to participate in a structured aftercare program to maintain recovery.
