Man Lift Operations

Date Reviewed:  February 15, 2023

Before operation of a portable man lift, all personnel must be adequately trained on operating, inspection and maintenance standards (according to the manufacturer’s specifications) for the piece of equipment being operated.  This training must be formal and recorded on the worker’s training file.  Also, operators must be trained and certified in fall arrest systems.

Safe Operation includes, but is not limited to the following points:

Ensure the equipment used is the proper equipment for the job.  For example, scissor lifts are typically only made for use on stable and flat surfaces.  You must not exceed the load limit for the lift you are using.

Inspect the equipment prior to use, according to the manufacturer’s specifications (see forms).

Use appropriate fall arrest harnesses and lanyards when operating portable man lifts.

Do not move lifts when the boom or platform is raised / extended.

Use lifts on stable and flat surfaces.

Ensure that outriggers are fully extended before use (where provided).

Ensure that communication equipment is provided on the platform, or ensure someone is on the ground in the event of emergency or equipment failure.

Protect the equipment from other traffic or mobile equipment (barricade, flag and communicate).

No employee shall modify or alter the structure, hydraulics, or mechanics of any portable man lift without written consent from the manufacturer.
