If a worker’s eyes may be injured or irritated at a specific work site or when performing a specific task, the worker shall wear properly fitted and approved eye protection according to the CSA Standard Z94.3-07 or ANSI Z87.1-2010 which shows the minimum requirements for Eye and Face Protectors. All non prescription safety glasses MUST bear either the CSA or ANSI certification stamp.
Safety Glasses – Class 1 Protectors (prescription and non-prescription, vision correcting and non-vision correcting)
•Eye protection is required for all persons (including visitors) at worksites. Appropriate eye protection will be supplied to visitors.
•All safety glasses must be equipped with side shields. Employees are required to buy the removable side shields for their prescription eyeglasses.
•Lenses must be scratch resistant, Hardex Glass or polycarbonate.
•All frames must be certified as safety frames, with rated di-electric properties.
•Lenses may be clear or shaded, as desired. Personnel observing or working around welding operations must have Class 1B rated glasses.
•If an employee is wearing contact lenses during work which may be hazardous (such as welding), the worker shall be informed of these hazards by their supervisor as well as the alternatives to wearing these lenses.
Chemical Goggles – Class 2 Protectors (required for protection from flying objects, particles and when handling chemicals)
•Must be soft, pliable - vinyl plastic type.
•Ventilation ports for defogging are required.
•Must have an adjustable headband.
Welding Helmets / Shields / Hoods – Class 3, 4 or 5 Protectors (required for welding activities)
•According to the specific welding activity and the risks involved (Falling objects dust, splash, abrasive materials, radiation, high heat, etc.), the appropriate welding eye protection should be selected and worn.
Face Shields – Class 6 Protectors (required for protection from flying objects)
•Visor must be adjustable with a minimum size of 20 cm x 30 cm (8" x 12").
•A face shield must be worn or used by any worker who is watching a welding process or as specified by safe work practices or procedures. It is the responsibility of the person performing the work to ensure that this is done.
Respirator Face pieces – Class 7 Protectors (When working with chemicals, sampling High Vapour Pressure - HVP - liquids and when lighting large pieces of gas-fired oilfield equipment).
