Government Agencies
Communications with the required government agencies must be completed as per the applicable legislation. Client Company Representatives will make these calls if the emergency occurred on their worksite. Only the most senior Power Tech Industries Ltd. Representative will make these calls if the emergency occurred on a Company worksite, as follows:
•Occupational Health & Safety (OH&S) must be notified as soon as reasonably possible when an incident results in, or has the potential to result in the death of a worker or in an injury that will require the worker to be admitted to a hospital for more than 72 hours.
•Workers Compensation Board (WCB) must be contacted whenever an injury results in, or may result in, a lost time or compensable injury.
Such communications should be kept as brief as possible, providing only the known facts about the incident. Always assure the government agency that an internal investigation will be conducted and that the results of any investigation will be made available to them. Don't speculate on the incident's cause(s) or on the final outcome. Don't fix blame or admit guilt in any situation.
General Public / Neighbours
Power Tech Industries Ltd. employees shall not discuss any emergency with the public, especially if it occurred on a Client’s worksite. The senior company representative should alleviate concerns by talking to neighbours and assuring them that the situation is over, what happened (briefly), and what the company is doing to control a Company related emergency situation. Client Company operators will deal with the public if an emergency involves their lease or property.
Media
Power Tech Industries Ltd. employees / contractors shall not make a statement or comment to the media regarding a client’s emergency, property, or business. The Power Tech Industries Ltd. representative may only direct the media to the appropriate client Company’s Representative.
Notification of Next of Kin
The intent of the following requirements is to ensure that the family impact is minimized. To ensure this, a third party service should be used to assist with informing family members of serious injury or death. Every community has services available to assist with this notification. The Police, or Church Clergy, can also assist with these types of communication.
•Notification should be made in person by Police, and where possible, accompanied by a Power Tech Industries Ltd. representative familiar to the victim's family.
•Only the Police, or Power Tech Industries Ltd. Management, is permitted to release the victims names after permission is granted by the next-of-kin.
•Notification statements will only be made by Power Tech Ltd Management or their designate(s).
Investigation of a serious/fatal incident:
•The senior Power Tech Industries Ltd. employee will investigate any emergency situation according to the Incident Investigation section of this manual. If the incident took place on a Power Tech Industries Ltd. worksite, the On-Site Supervisor will obtain names of all witnesses to the incident and make any notes that may assist in obtaining written statements from witnesses.
•RCMP, Medical Examiner, Occupational Health and Safety, and a Power Tech Industries Ltd. Representative will travel to the site to meet with the On-Site Supervisor and witnesses (if the witnesses are Power Tech Industries Ltd. employees). All material and equipment involved in a fatal incident are to remain untouched until cleared for removal by the Police and the Occupational Health and Safety Division Investigator.
•The On-Site Supervisor will document all valuables belonging to the deceased before turning them over to the Medical Examiner. A signed receipt must be obtained.
Contractors
If a Contractor is involved in an incident, the senior Power Tech Industries Ltd. Manager shall contact the Contractor's office. If the Contractor's employee is fatally injured, arrangements should be made for the Contractor and RCMP to notify the next-of-kin.
