Commercial Vehicle Operation

All Power Tech Industries 3/4 ton or larger vehicles with an RGVW of > 4500 kg are considered as Commercial Vehicles and employees must follow policies and procedures as required by the National Safety Code for Motor Carriers and Motor Vehicle Transport Act. NOTE:  Due to the work area of Power Tech employees, driving over 13 hours per day is not required.  Log books are not necessary, as employees return to the Power Tech shop each day and have more than the required 8 hours of consecutive off-duty time.  The following will be adhered to:

Any person operating a Power Tech vehicle must hold a valid Saskatchewan drivers license.  Exception may be made if an employee has relocated from a different province and in the process of changing the Province of issue to Saskatchewan.  All new employees will supply an up to date driver abstract for review by Senior Management.

All employees operating Power Tech vehicles / equipment must follow applicable Provincial laws and regulations relating to highway safety, including the use of seat belts and distracted driving regulations.

To prevent parking incidents, Employees are encourage to use drive through parking when available.  If drive through parking is not available, employees should back into their parking spot if possible.

Supervisors/workers will visually inspect their vehicle / mobile equipment before operating it at the beginning of each shift.  The intent of vehicle, equipment, and materials inspections, is to assess the conditions and work readiness of the vehicle, equipment and materials, to ensure that manufacturer, OHS, and company standards are being maintained, and to ensure defects and hazards are being identified and controlled.

All deficiencies shall be recorded on the inspection checklist along with corrective actions required or completed.  All corrective actions that cannot be completed immediately, shall be assigned to a specified person for follow up by a specified date.  Completed checklists shall be forwarded and maintained on file in the Estevan office.  

NOTE: any defects found during an inspection that may affect the safe operation or occupancy of a vehicle, will require the vehicle to be taken out of service and the defects shall be repaired immediately.

No employee shall operate any Power Tech vehicle / equipment while fatigued or under the influence of alcohol or drugs, including prescription drugs that may affect their ability to safety operate said equipment.

No employee shall place / install / affix any sign, sticker, label on a vehicle / equipment in such a way that it would obstruct or impede the drivers vision or us of any controls required to safely operate the vehicle / equipment.

No employee shall converse (unless in hands free mode) / text / web  surf / operate a cell phone while operating any vehicle / equipment.

All loads shall be secured prior to driving by the use of cargo netting or appropriately rated ratchet straps.  Tarp straps are not considered as suitable for load securement.

Ratchet straps will be inspected prior to each use and shall have no knots, frayed areas, cuts or cracks.

All anchor points will be inspected to ensure they are not cracked or broken and that they have sufficient strength to sustain the pull of the ratchet strap.

No load shall interfere with the vehicle safety nor block access or egress to the vehicle.

Loads must be rechecked after approximately 70 kilometers to ensure they are still secure.

All vehicle incidents must be reported to the Estevan office as soon as possible via phone, and followed up by a written report.
