Fall Protection Policy

OBJECTIVE:

 

The objective of Power Tech Industries Ltd. Fall Protection Program is to identify and evaluate fall hazards to which employees will be exposed, and to provide specific training as required by the Occupational Health and Safety Acts 1993 and Regulations 1996.

 

POLICY:

 

It is the policy of Power Tech Industries Ltd. to protect its employees from occupational injuries by implementing and enforcing safe work practices to manage the Fall Protection Program. The Power Tech Industries Ltd. Fall Protection Program shall comply with the OHS requirements. A copy of the Occupational Health and Safety Acts 1993 and Regulations 1996 shall be made available to all employees.

 

Any time a worker who may work at a height of 3 metres or more in the case of a temporary installation or 1.2 metres or more in the case of a permanent installation or when an employee could fall into a hazardous substance, material or operating machine, a fall protection plan will be developed and followed.

 

No worker will be allowed to carry out any task where fall protection may be needed until such a time as he/she has been trained on the installation, limitations, inspection and maintenance of applicable fall protection systems.

 

RESPONSIBILITIES:

 

Employer:

 

It is the responsibility of Power Tech Industries Ltd. to provide fall protection to affected employees, and to ensure that all employees understand and adhere to the procedures of this plan.

 

Supervisors:

 

Supervisors have the primary responsibility for the implementation of the Fall Protection Program in their work area. The supervisor should be a competent person, as defined by OH&S Acts and Regulations, or ensure that responsibility for the competent person is assigned to a qualified individual within the work group.

 

Supervisors must assure that all fall protection gear is inspected for imperfections before each use and an onsite rescue plan is created.  Any fall protection equipment that does not pass the pre-use inspection must be removed from service immediately.  The proper fall arrest form shall be utilized for each instance where fall protection gear is worn.  Only trained individuals are assigned work that requires use of fall protection systems (other than guardrails).

 

Safety Co-ordinator:

 

It is the responsibility of acting Safety Co-ordinator to implement this program by:

 

Performing routine safety checks of work operations;

Enforcing Power Tech Industries Ltd. safety policy and procedures;

Correcting any unsafe practices or conditions immediately;

Ensure training is provided to all employees and supervisors in recognizing fall hazards and the use of fall protection systems;

Maintaining records of employee training, equipment issue, and fall protection systems used at Power Tech Industries Ltd. jobsites; and

Investigating and documenting all incidents that result in employee injury.

 

Employees:

It is the responsibility of all employees to:

Understand and adhere to the procedures outlined in this Fall Protection Program;

Bring to management’s attention any unsafe or hazardous conditions or practices that may cause injury to either themselves or any other employees; and

Report any incident that causes injury to an employee, regardless of the nature of the injury.

 

 

PROCEDURES:

 

All work performed in elevated areas such as aerial lifts, roofs, elevated platforms, on top of industrial equipment, building ledges, etc. shall be in accordance with this policy and the referenced fall protection program in Section 5.6.10.
