A new employee (must be 18 years of age) will be assigned a competent worker to deliver a New Employee Orientation on his first day of work, prior to beginning actual work. The New Employee Orientation will follow a checklist to assist the indoctrinator in the orientation. This will ensure that no important details are missed and to ensure consistency from orientation to orientation. The checklist will include areas covering the new hires role and responsibilities for his/her new position, as well as expectations, health and safety policies / procedures, hazards / controls / reporting, WHMIS 2015, applicable OHS legislation, progressive discipline policy, emergency response, applicable forms.
All Employees will receive training in their inherent OHS rights, right to know, right to participate and the right to refuse. Specific instructions will be given for work refusal scenarios, including the need, and procedure, to immediately report ALL such work refusals to the job Supervisor.
The orientation checklist will be signed by both the new worker and person conducting the orientation. It will be maintained on the new worker’s file. The new worker will also be provided access to this manual for reference purposes.
The new worker’s comprehension of the material covered will be tested by asking him/her questions. Tour the new worker around a typical work site to ensure all aspects of the orientation checklist are covered. This process will be applied to all new workers and sub-contractors of Power Tech Industries Ltd., regardless of their experience level.
Employees will receive training on using pre-job safety meeting forms, including hazard assessments and risk calculations.
The new employee will remain under the constant supervision of a competent employee until Management believes that the new employee is competent enough to perform the job without supervision.
Approximately two weeks after the initial orientation, the indoctrinator will review some more important details of the orientation with the new worker. This ensures that the new employee understands the requirements of the safety program and is provided the opportunity to ask questions.
Promoted or transferred employees will receive a new orientation following the same format as above, plus detailing their new job requirements and, if applicable, responsibilities for supervision of apprentices and helpers. Newly promoted supervisory employees will be provided with supervisor training when available.
Employees arriving on a worksite will be given an orientation of the worksite by using the Field Task Hazard Assessment process. This will be completed either by the onsite supervisor or the client representative. A toolbox meeting will be held with all employees to ensure awareness of the assessment.
When new equipment is used in a job process, all employees will receive orientation on the proper operating procedures and safety measures for operation of the equipment.
